How to save recipes from TikTok

Add the video to your Favorites so you can find it again. Then save the recipe itself, because on TikTok it is often spoken or flashed on screen, not written down. Check the caption, pause and screenshot the quantities, read the comments, and look for a link to the creator’s written version.

1. Favorite the video

TikTok’s Favorites keep a video in a private list, so you can find it without scrolling back through your likes. It is the right first step, and a quick one.

It saves the video, not the recipe. You still have to watch it again to cook from it. And if the creator deletes the video or goes private, it is gone from your Favorites too.

2. Find where the recipe is written

TikTok recipes rarely sit in one place. Work through these in order:

WhereWhat to look forWatch out for
The captionRead it in full. Some creators fit the whole ingredient list.Often just the dish name and hashtags.
The video itselfPause where the quantities appear on screen, and screenshot.Amounts that are only said out loud.
The commentsCreators often answer “how much?” with the numbers.Answers from other viewers, not the creator.
The creator’s profileA link to their website or recipe page.Nothing. This is usually the tested version.

3. Pause and screenshot

When the ingredients flash up on screen, pause and take a screenshot. Take one per ingredient card if you need to. On an iPhone, Live Text lets you select the words in a screenshot and copy them out later.

Our guide to recipe screenshots on your iPhone covers keeping them findable.

4. Write it down while you watch

When the amounts are only said out loud, nothing beats a note and the pause button. Write the ingredients first, then the steps in the order they happen. Put the creator’s handle and the video link at the bottom.

Missing a number? Ask in the comments. Creators answer those more often than you’d think, and it tells them people are cooking their food.

How Otto does it

Paste the TikTok link into Otto. It reads the video’s caption, pulls out the ingredients and steps, and shows you what it found before anything saves. The recipe keeps the creator’s handle and a link back to the video. It comes in without a photo, so add your own once you’ve cooked it.

Otto reads the caption only. It can’t hear the voiceover or read the text on screen. If the caption has no recipe, Otto says so rather than guessing. Then:

  • Snap a photo. Screenshot the frame with the ingredients, then tap Snap a photo. Otto opens the camera; close it and you can pick the screenshot from your photos.
  • Paste text. Paste the note you wrote while watching, and Otto sorts it into ingredients and steps.
  • The creator’s website link. If the recipe is written up on their site, paste that link.

Every import opens for review, which matters here: fill in anything the video only said out loud. From a screenshot or pasted text, Otto doesn’t know who made the recipe, so add the creator’s handle to the title.

Captions, text you paste and photos you import are sent to Otto’s AI provider to be read, and aren’t used to train models. The privacy policy has the detail.

Common questions

Where do TikTok recipes actually live?

In four places, and often spread across them: the caption, the text on screen, the voiceover, and the creator’s own website. A favorite keeps the video. It doesn’t pull any of those out for you.

The recipe isn’t written anywhere. What now?

Watch it once with a note open and write the ingredients down as you go. Pause when something is measured. If a quantity is missing, ask in the comments.

Will my favorites last?

Only as long as the video does. A favorite points at the video. If the creator deletes it or makes it private, you lose it too. Write the recipe down somewhere you control.

Can Otto import a TikTok link?

Yes, when the recipe is written in the caption. Paste the video link and Otto reads the caption, sorts it into ingredients and steps, and credits the creator’s handle with a link back. Otto can’t hear the video, so for a recipe that is only spoken or shown on screen, screenshot it and snap that in instead.

What does Otto cost?

Otto is free to download and has a free tier, which includes a few imports a month. Otto Club is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with a 1-week free trial, and lifts that limit. There is no advertising at any tier.
