How to save recipes from Instagram

Tap save on the post and put it in a Recipes collection. Then keep a copy of the recipe itself: copy the caption, screenshot the recipe slide, or follow the creator’s link to the written version. The save alone isn’t enough. If the creator deletes the post, it leaves your saves too.

1. Save the post to a collection

Instagram lets you save any post and group your saves into collections. Make one called Recipes, or one per kind of dish, and save straight into it. It keeps the video and the caption together, and it is the fastest thing you can do while you scroll.

It is also the weakest. A save points at the post. If the creator deletes it, archives it or goes private, your save goes with it. Collections are also hard to search once they hold a few hundred posts.

2. Copy the caption

Many food creators write the full recipe in the caption. Copy it and paste it into a note, with the creator’s handle and the post link underneath. The note survives even if the post doesn’t.

Read it through before you trust it. Captions get edited after posting, and some list the ingredients but leave the method in the video.

3. Screenshot the recipe slide

Carousel posts often end with a recipe card as the last slide. Swipe to it and screenshot it. For a Reel, pause where the quantities are on screen. On an iPhone you can select the text in a screenshot later with Live Text.

Screenshots pile up fast. Our guide to recipe screenshots on your iPhone covers finding them again.

4. Get the written recipe from the creator

When the caption says “recipe in bio”, the link on the creator’s profile usually leads to the full recipe on their website. When it says “comment RECIPE”, they send it by direct message. Either way, you end up with the tested version, and the creator gets the visit.

No caption, no link? Ask in the comments. Plenty of creators answer with the quantities.

How Otto does it

Paste the Instagram link into Otto. It reads the caption, pulls out the ingredients and steps, and shows you what it found before anything saves. The recipe keeps the creator’s handle and a link back to the post. It comes in without a photo, so add your own once you’ve cooked it.

That only works when the recipe is written in the caption. Otto can’t watch the video or read a carousel slide from the link. If the caption has no recipe, Otto says so rather than guessing. Then:

  • Snap a photo. Screenshot the recipe slide or a paused frame. Otto opens the camera; close it and you can pick the screenshot from your photos.
  • Paste text. Paste a recipe a creator sent you by message, or one you wrote down while watching.
  • The creator’s website link. If the bio leads to a written recipe, paste that link. It is usually the fullest version.

From a screenshot or pasted text, Otto doesn’t know who made the recipe, so add the creator’s handle to the title. The credit should stay with the recipe.

Captions, text you paste and photos you import are sent to Otto’s AI provider to be read, and aren’t used to train models. The privacy policy has the detail.

Common questions

Can I save an Instagram recipe without an app?

Yes. Save the post inside Instagram, then copy the caption into your notes or screenshot the recipe slide. The save keeps the video. The copy keeps the recipe if the post ever goes.

Why did a recipe vanish from my Instagram saves?

A save is a bookmark, not a copy. When a creator deletes or archives a post, or makes their account private, it drops out of your saves. That is why it pays to copy the recipe itself somewhere you control.

The caption just says “recipe in bio”. Now what?

Open the creator’s profile and tap the link there. It usually leads to their website or a page of links, with the full written recipe. That page is the best version to keep, and it is the one a recipe app can import.

Can Otto import an Instagram link?

Yes, when the recipe is written in the caption. Paste the post or Reel link and Otto reads the caption, sorts it into ingredients and steps, and credits the creator’s handle with a link back. If the recipe is only in the video or on a slide, screenshot it and snap that into Otto instead.

What does Otto cost?

Otto is free to download and has a free tier, which includes a few imports a month. Otto Club is $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, with a 1-week free trial, and lifts that limit. There is no advertising at any tier.
