Paprika is not broken. It is actively maintained, it is rated 4.9 across more than 53,000 ratings, and if it is working for you the right move is to keep it. People go looking for an alternative for narrower reasons than “it is bad” — usually the cost of buying it again on every platform, or wanting to import recipes that do not live on a web page. What it actually costs to leave
This is the part comparison pages skip. Recipes you saved from a website keep their link, and a link can be re-imported into anything that reads a web page. Recipes you typed in yourself do not have that escape hatch — they live in Paprika’s own export file, and Otto does not read that file today.
So the practical answer is: check how many of your recipes came from a URL before you move. If it is most of them, switching is an afternoon. If you have two hundred typed in by hand, it is not, and the honest advice is to stay where they are and use something else for what you save from here on.
What to ask of whatever you pick next
- Does one purchase cover your devices, or is each one a separate sale?
- Can you get your recipes back out, in a form something else can read?
- Does each saved recipe keep a live link to where it came from? A recipe that remembers its source survives the app that stored it.

Do I have to buy Paprika again on my Mac?
Yes. Paprika’s own site says “each version of Paprika is sold separately”, and its Mac download link goes to a $29.99 Mac App Store listing, against $4.99 on iPhone. Windows and Android are separate purchases again. For one phone that is a bargain; for a phone plus a laptop it is the single most common reason people go looking for something else.
Is there a free alternative to Paprika on iPhone?
Crouton, Mela, Pestle and Otto are all free to download. Free to download is not the same as free forever — most of them, Otto included, charge for something once you are past the basics. What none of them do is charge you a second time for the same app on a second device.
Can I move my Paprika recipes into another app?
